A new hero is coming to save Christmas… at least in Gotham, anyway. Damian Wayne — Bruce Wayne’s son and the fifth Robin — takes up a brand new mantle in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming special, Merry Little Batman.
And to think it almost didn’t see the light of day.
In 2022, this movie was one of many DC animated projects axed from HBO Max (now just Max) during the between Discovery and WarnerMedia. Fortunately for us, Amazon acquired the rights to all of them and are giving us an early Christmas gift. They’ve officially announced December 8th,, 2023 as Merry Little Batman’s release date, making it the first of these new projects to debut.
Merry Little Batman Cast and Crew
According to the press release, the official synopsis is as follows:
When young Damian Wayne finds himself alone in Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve, he must transform into 'Little Batman' in order to defend his home and Gotham City from the crooks and supervillains intent on destroying the holidays.
Merry Little Batman features the voice of Yonas Kibreab (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Elio) as Damian. He is joined by Luke Wilson (Stargirl) as Batman, James Cromwell (Succession) as Alfred, and David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as the Joker.
Mike Roth (Regular Show) directs a script written by Morgan Evans (Teen Titans Go!) and Jase Ricci (Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure). Roth also executive produced along with the chief of Warner Bros. Animation, Sam Register.
Side note: both writing and voice recording were completed long before the SAG-AFTRA strike and the now-resolved WGA strike.
Batman and Christmas
Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Dark Knight save Gotham during Christmas time. Tim Burton’s Batman Returns is a surprise holiday favorite for many thanks to its festive, wintertime setting. And another canceled project, the live-action Batgirl film, was about to follow the same tone. Set photos showed bags full of fake snow, as well as a full-blown holiday market.
While it’s unlikely that one will ever see the light of day, at least if James Gunn is to be believed — The Elf Squad is glad this little special was saved. And we can’t wait to finally see it and root for this adorable new superhero.
Merry Little Batman will be available for streaming Amazon Prime Video on December 8th.Want to have a super Christmas?
