New York City’s biggest and most popular holiday market is all set to open this season. Union Square Holiday Market officially opens on November 17th, 2022 and will stay open every day — except Thanksgiving — up until Christmas Eve. Hosted by Urbanspace, its wide array of shops and food vendors truly offer something for everyone. No matter who you are or what you’re looking for, you’ll embrace the holiday spirit as soon as you enter this iconic New York intersection.
Union Square: The Perfect Site for a Christmas Market
Having started back in 1993, Union Square hosts Urbanspace’s oldest holiday market in New York City. It’s also the largest in all five boroughs, with a whopping 180 vendors set up every single night. Kiosks are all lined up in seven arched rows to form a half circle at the south end of the park. The Christmas colors, evergreen garlands, and holiday music are more than enough to set the mood. But when it’s all lit up after sundown, that’s when you’ll really feel the Christmastime atmosphere.
As a year-long hotspot for markets and events, Union Square is a no-brainer for holiday shopping and creative gifts. After all, it’s been the site of social activism and regular art movements ever since the 19th century. To this day, you’ll find plenty of artists and artisans performing, selling their wares, and holding demonstrations. The centrally located park puts you within walking distance to the Flatiron District, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, and Gramercy, so there’s no shortage of shops, restaurants, or entertainment. And we can’t forget about the year-round Green Market that takes place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday all year long.
Walking In a Winter Marketplace
What sets Union Square’s market apart from the rest is its eclectic range of vendors. You’ll find the perfect gifts for you and your loved ones no matter what your interests are. From standard books, clothes, and jewelry to mini-models, home-brewing kits, and intricate woodwork. Need presents for all the kids in your life? How about something for your dog or cat? No worries, they’ve got plenty of those on-hand, too. You’ll even find many local shops — like The Strand Bookstore, United Leather, and the New York Puzzle Collection — in some of these stalls. After all, there’s no better time than the holidays to attract new customers.
And let’s not forget about the food and drinks — you’re going to need them after a long day of walking and shopping. And around here, you’ll have your pick of all the wintertime and international delights you can think of. Try some amazing perogies, arepas, bao buns, or a fresh Belgian waffle with plenty of toppings. Sip on a cup of hot chocolate, cider, or mulled wine to keep you warm. And for later, get yourself a box of truffles from No Chewing Allowed… just try not to eat them all before you get home.
