The Comeback of an 80s Icon
In an age of so many young female singer/songwriters, it’s easy to forget just how much of a trailblazer Debbie Gibson was. But during an age where teen pop stars were completely controlled by music executives, she insisted on writing and producing her own material, In fact, at just 16 years old, she became the youngest artist ever to write, produce, and perform a Billboard number-one single when she released her hit ‘Foolish Beat.’ And even more impressive — her record still stands to this day. Between this,
This also marks one year after her musical comeback, as Ms. Gibson hadn’t released any new music in almost 20 years. After 2001’s ‘M.Y.O.B.,’ she recorded two cover albums — one for musical theatre tracks and another of translated songs by Japanese artists. Then, just last year, she finally released brand new music with ‘The Body Remembers.’ During that time in between, she focused more on songwriting and acting in film television — the ‘Mega Shark’ film series, anyone? She’s even starred on Broadway in Les Miserable, Beauty and the Beast, and Cabaret, along with many successful touring and regional productions.
