It’s beginning to look a lot like Lindsay Lohan is back. The former teen star is making her long-awaiting return to acting and bringing the Christmas spirit with her in the upcoming film, Falling for Christmas. Premiering November 10th, 2022 on Netflix, as part of a two-picture deal with the streamer.
Given its great reviews and excited reception, things are already looking up for Ms. Lohan. This marks her first movie in three years, with her last one being the 2019 horror flick, Among the Shadows. However, this one is sure to have all the humor and heart we’ll need for this holiday season.
A Fun (and Forgetful) Christmas Movie
In Falling for Christmas, Lohan stars as Sierra Belmont, a spoiled hotel heiress who wants to be known for more than her family name. In the days leading up to Christmas, she goes on a ski trip and gets engaged while on top of a mountain. But shortly afterwards, she has a sudden accident that leaves her alone in the hospital with amnesia. With nowhere to go, she’s taken in by Jake, a simple lodge owner and single father. As she regains her memories, and grows closer to this small yet loving family, she learns to embrace the real meaning of Christmas and reconsiders what she wants from life. All of this culminates in a surprise visit that forces her to make some very tough decisions.
Joining Lohan is Glee’s Chord Overstreet, who plays her on-screen love interest. This also marks a big return to acting for him, as he’s focused more on music since 2017. Also featured is Olivia Perez as Overstreet’s daughter and Malignant’s George Young as Lohan’s new fiance. And soap star and Hallmark Channel regular Jack Wagner appears as Lohan’s on-screen father. And to make this a family affair, her younger sister Ali also makes a cameo appearance.
The Rise and Fall (and Return) of a Teen Superstar
Born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, Lohan got her start in entertainment at just three years old. She began modeling children’s clothing lines for Calvin Klein and Abercrombie, and appeared in dozens of national commercials. She had already appeared in the soap opera Another World before in Disney’s 1998 remake of The Parent Trap. She came into the spotlight again when she starred in Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, which became her highest grossing movie to date. But her next role as Cady Stanton in the 2004 comedy, Mean Girls, truly elevated her into a cultural status.
Unfortunately, Lohan’s early success was followed by a very public — and prolonged — fall from grace. Her efforts to change up her image with more adult roles were met with bad reviews and worst box office sales. Reports of film delays, family drama, and troubling on-set behavior circulated throughout the media. And years of drug abuse, DUI arrests, and stints in rehab cost her numerous roles and sent her further into a downward spiral.
Yet despite numerous setbacks, Lohan has continued to stay active with regular TV appearances and starring roles in limited-release films. She even tried her hand at theatre with the 2014 West End production of David Mamet’s Speed-the Plow. And now, with her latest venture, she’s fully embracing the Christmas Spirit, just like her Mean Girls co-stars Lacey Chabert and Jonathan Bennett. Though she has yet to reach the level she was during her peak, we’re happy to see her doing so well after all this time.
Following this holiday rom-com, Lindsay Lohan will be reteaming with Janeen Damian for another Netflix comedy, Irish Wish.
Falling For Christmas will be available to stream on Netflix beginning November 10th, 2022. And like many viewers across the country, the Elf Squad looks forward to seeing Lohan’s festive return to acting.
